Using the Tarot for Creativity and Empowerment

Birthday Spread

Today is my birthday (Happy Birthday to me!) so I thought I would do a birthday spread, to look at the influences in the coming year.

The birthday spread is in the shape of a cake with a candle on top, and is designed to help you evaluate the year that is passing, look at where you are right now, and see what new energies, challenges, and gifts the new year is bringing you. I used the Legacy of the Divine Tarot.

Below is the spread layout:

The card meanings are shown below.

Card 1: Past influences that are ending or passing out of your life
10 of Swords

So happy to see this passing out of my life! Yes, this last year was kind of rough. But according to this, the worst is now over.

Card 2: Accomplishments of the past year to reflect on
6 of Cups

I see this as representing all of the happy memories that I have made in the past year, including all of the new people that have come into my life. I have made some major accomplishments – or at least have had some idea to be put into action.

Card 3: Issues, tasks, or goals carried forward from last year into the coming year
7 of Coins

This makes perfect sense – all that I have planted this year will come to harvest in the coming year. This is where I enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Card 4: Where you are right now
6 of Coins

This card is a card of giving and receiving. I have put myself into receiving mode, opening myself up to whatever abundance the universe chooses to give.

Card 5: New influences that will be coming into your life in the near future
2 of Coins

In the coming year, I may find myself juggling a lot more. My partner’s job is in jeopardy so this may literally be telling me that we may have to juggle our finances a bit coming up.

Card 6: Challenges you may face in the coming year
8 of Wands

To me, the 8 of Wand is a card of change, often swift change. Some of the changes may come so quickly that it may be a bit of a challenge to adapt. My intuition does in fact tell me that the winds of change are on the horizon.

Card 7: Goals that you can achieve in the coming year
9 of Wands

The 9 of Wands is about facing challenges in a courageous manner but in order to do this, discipline is sometimes required. So no matter how turbulent things get, this tells me that I am prepared to meet the challenge.

Card 8: The overall focus or outlook for the coming year
8 of Coins

Work, work and work! My focus in the coming year should be on work as well as training. I need to learn as much as possible about my craft so that I can be the best I can be.

Card 9: Your birthday gift – a blessing you will receive during the year
2 of Wands

This is a card of personal power and authority – of growth when coupled with work and discipline. I often see this as the early stages of an enterprise, of a new doorway opening up. One of my favorite sayings to accompany this card, “if you can dream it, you can do it”.

So all in all, not a bad year coming up. There will be some challenges along the way that I will have to overcome but I should be able to bring any previous work and plans into fruition.

Cups: 1
Wands: 3
Swords: 1
Coins: 4

The spread is heaving on the Coins and Wands, this reaffirms that the focus in the coming year will be on business, creativity and material matters. Not too much going on on the emotional front. The status quo is a good thing.

By the way, a Birthday reading is a nice gift for your friends and family!
