Tarot 101: A Look At The Myths Surrounding Tarot

There are several myths surrounding the Tarot, many of which have continued throughout the decades. Some of these myths have become so strongly engrained in our society that many folks consider them to be fact. When you think about Tarot, what ideas pop into your mind? What Tarot myths do you hold?

Some common myths are:

  • Tarot is evil
  • Tarot comes from Atlantis
  • Tarot comes from aliens
  • Tarot comes from the Romani (Gypsies)
  • Tarot comes from ancient Egypt
  • Tarot tells you what definitely will happen
  • You must not/cannot read for yourself
  • The Death card means you or someone else is going to die
  • You must reorder your deck before every reading
  • The Devil card means there’s evil around you
  • You must not buy your own deck; you must either steal one or receive one as a gift
  • You must never allow anyone else to touch your cards
  • You must sleep with your Tarot under your pillow
  • Only psychics can read the Tarot
  • Tarot is very difficult to learn
  • A card that falls out of your deck while shuffling has special meaning
  • You must wrap your cards in black silk
  • Tarot can attract ghosts or malevolent spirits
